For 98% of cars, vans, and lorries, when no keys are available, it is necessary to connect a programming device to the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) port to program a new key and start the vehicle. In some cases, accessing the vehicle’s dashboard, ECU, or EEPROM is required, but this is a complex and time-intensive process.

Unfortunately, thieves often target specific vehicles, such as Ford vans, by breaking into them, either by picking or drilling the ignition to turn it. Once inside, they connect a device to the OBD port to program a key and steal the vehicle.

Attempting to physically remove or force the OBD lock could result in damaging the OBD port itself, but it would not grant the thief access to start the vehicle. The goal of the OBD lock is to deter theft by blocking unauthorized access to the vehicle’s primary source of information—the ECU and key programming functions. This device significantly slows down potential thieves, making the process of vehicle theft more difficult and less appealing.
